Boot Camp

I knew we were flying into Orlando in a few months and did not know how I would make it through. One day I got a phone call and it was my husband, I was shocked because we are not supposed to hear from him during boot camp. He got a job in the laundry center and there was a phone where he was working. We talked for a half-hour every day; this was a great gift to help me get through these ninety days much faster. I didn't like to hear about what he was going through during boot camp with them getting yelled at and have to do push-ups, but I new that he was fine. Before long it was the day to leave for his graduating ceremony.
I was shocked when I saw that he had no hair, but I still give him a big hug and kiss. The rules where to wait in a room until they let the sailors come out to see us. By now none of the rules bothered me because all I cared about was seeing him. After the ceremony, my husband was free to stay with us for a couple of days.
This leads me back to the day at Sea World, a chance to just have fun and be with him again after being apart for so long. I did not realize until the National Anthem started to play, that our life has changed and it will be different than anything I have every known. As the tears came down my face, I knew that I was with the man I loved but I had no indication about what road was ahead of us.
We had to say our good-byes again, but this time he would be home in a few weeks.

the beginning

At the start of the National Anthem my husband stops and salutes while the song is playing over the loud speaker.  I thought we were here as a family, to have a fun day at Sea World in Orlando Florida. As the song started to play, tear came down my face. What was I getting into, can I be a navy wife? I do not know anything about navy life, and my thoughts were going in many directions as I watch my husband wearing the summer whites’ uniform standing their saluting.
Let me fill you in how we got here. My husband’s family is no strangers to military life. His grandpa, dad, uncles, and brother were all in the military from WWII to Vietnam, and it was my husband’s time to follow in the family footsteps. I have only really spent time with my husband and did not know about his family life. As my family, everyone was blue collar workers so this was a whole new experience for me.
It was November of 1990 and it was time for my husband to go off to boot camp. His mom, dad, me and our son took him to the recruiting office to say are goodbyes. It is so hard because I knew that I could not talk to him for ninety days; he would miss, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. My heart sank; I have never felt this feeling before. We cried seeing him walk away as he left in the van.

First Blog

Hi everyone, I decided to start a new blog on my life as a navy wife. It has been 20 years of being in the military and I thought I could share my experience with friends and family. I hope one day, I can help other new navy wifes and help them adapt and learn from my experiences. Please pass on my email blog to your friends and family.

Thank you,
Tracy
